For the past three years
Way Truth Life Radio has given missionary support to Wantok Radio Light, a radio
network in Papua New Guinea. Thanks to the generosity of our donors during
previous Sharathons we have been able to help with the construction of a station
in the city of Lae, satellite uplink capability, educational resources, and give
a generous supply of solar powered fixed-tuned radios for distribution in the
country.
When
PNG Christian Broadcasting Network began operating Wantok
Radio Light, the first office and studio space was in a
rented three bedroom apartment building on the outskirts of
Port Moresby. This extremely secure arrangement was vital in
those early years for the placement of a missionary couple
who lived in the same apartment from which the radio
ministry began. Within the first two years, the growing
radio ministry outgrew these facilities and relocated to a
commercial rental facility in downtown Port Moresby where
they have been for three years.
However, due to the increase in
commercial rental rates in the city and the very public
popularity of Wantok Radio Light across the nation, the
owners notified the ministry of a dramatic increase in
rental rates. This motivated the board of directors to look
for a new and permanent home for the PNG Christian
Broadcasting Network.
A 10
acre property on the outskirts of Port Moresby has been
located. The property contains several large buildings,
including home for an onsite manager, a large “dormitory”
type building, a 16 room motel unit, a main large office
building, an open-air meeting facility large enough for
about 300 people, and plenty of parking and room to grow.
In the
PNG culture, it is the responsibility of an employer to
provide housing for employees, particularly for the single
female employees. The radio ministry also provides safe
transportation for these young ladies who work for the
ministry. The ability to house staff on the radio ministry
compound, and reduce the cost of housing and transportation
has made this particular property very attractive.
Additionally, the motel unit can be used for visiting work
teams and guests.
This year
a portion of Sharathon giving will again go to Wantok Radio
Light as they continue to expand their ministry in Papua New
Guinea with the purchase of property for their operations.
